Confirmed: Nikon Coolpix S1000pj Sports an Integrated Projector, Other Models Announced
We heard rumors Nikon would be releasing the world’s first digital camera with a built-in projector, but didn’t have much information to go on. However, we’ve been able to confirm the speculation with Nikon, who sent us information on not one, but four new digicams it plans to release as part of its Coolpix series.
The one everyone is talking about — the S1000pj — will come with an "ultra-small" integrated projector capable of beaming images 5 to 40 inches in size. Nikon advertises a flexible throw distance ranging from 10 inches on up to 78 inches (6.5 feet) with brightness rated up to 10 lumens. While using the projector, you can expect about an hour of battery life.
Other features include the ability to record movies at 640 x 480 resolution at 30fps, a 12.1 megapixel sensor, 5x wide-angle zoom, 2.7-inch high res LCD, 5-way hybrid VR image stabilization, motion detection with automatic shutter and ISO settings, up to 6400 ISO, 16 scene modes, and other odds and ends.
S570, S640, S70
Three other Coolpix cameras are also planned for a September release, starting with the sub-$200 (by a nickel) S570. For two Benjamins, the S570 boasts a 12.0 megapixel image sensor, 5x wide-angle zoom, up to ISO 3200 at full resolution, 2.7-inch LCD, 4-way VR image stabilization, and automatic focus on up to 12 faces. Nikon will offer the S570 in a variety of colors, including black, red, blue, and pink.
Moving a step up, the S640 ups the ante with a slightly larger image sensor at 12.2 megapixels, ISO from 100-6400, and a start up time of just 0.7 seconds, which Nikon claims is the fastest in its class. Offered in "Calm Black, Velour Red, Precious Pink, and Pearl White," the S640 will carry an MSRP of $250.
Finally, the S70 will sport a 3.5-inch OLED touchscreen interface with a "new generation of touchscreen controls that offer an enhanced shooting and playback experience," the ability to capture HD video in 720p, a 12.1 megapixel image sensor, 5x wide-angle zoom, ISO up to 6400, 5-way image stabiliation, and more. The S70 will come in "Red & Red, Champagne & Beige, Black & Black, and Champagne & Light Brown," with an MSRP set at $400.

Nikon Coolpix S1000pj First Digital Camera with a Projector?
Is that a projector in your pocket, or a Nikon Coolpix S1000pj digital camera? Perhaps both, if the latest rumor turns out to be true.
According to NikonRumors.com, the Coolpix S1000jp will be the first digital camera with a built-in projector that allows users to project photos or movie clips onto any flat surface at up to 40 inches in size. In addition to an LED projector, the Coolpix will also include a projector stand, a multi-function remote control, and other goodies.
Other details remain sparse, although preliminary specs show the new digicam sporting an effective resolution of 12.1 megapixels, a 5x Zoom-Nikkor lens, and a 28mm (equivalent) wide-angle coverage.
Look for availability sometime this September at an as-yet unannounced price.

Nikkor AF-S DX 35mm F/1.8G
The Nikkor AF-S DX 35mm F/1.8G is a new prime lens (meaning it has a fixed focal length of 35mm) from Nikon that has a few nice features. Most exciting is the speed of this lens - f/1.8 - that’s fast enough for many low light situations (it is the widest aperture DX-series lens available). This is a DX lens so is designed to work on all DX/cropped cameras including the D40, D40X, D60, D90, D300 etc

The focal length of 35mm sounds wide but is the equivalent of 52mm on a full frame or film body and is pretty close to producing ‘a picture angle similar to the field of vision as seen through the human eye.’ The lens also comes with Nikons Silent Wave Motor - making focussing quiet and smooth.
The Nikkor AF-S DX 35mm F/1.8G will have a recommended retail price of $199 USD when released in March and is already available for order on Amazon at that rate (pretty affordable for a lens of this speed).
Nikon AF-S DX Nikkor 35mm F/1.8G Lens News Release
Nikon Introduces The Fastest DX-Format Lens To Date: The AF-S DX Nikkor 35mm F/1.8G
Nikon Inc. today announced the AF-S DX NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G lens, which is the first fixed focal length, fast-aperture DX-format lens that affords photographers superb image quality along with the creative possibilities and versatility of the classic 50mm focal length (FX-format equivalent of 52mm). When mounted on a DX-format camera body, it enables photographers to document their world with a lens that produces a picture angle similar to the field of vision as seen through the human eye. Whether new to D-SLRs or a seasoned enthusiast, users will appreciate the extreme low-light performance and the expanded ability to dramatically separate the subject and background with the new 35mm DX lens’ wide f/1.8 aperture.
“The development and release of the 35mm f/1.8 NIKKOR lens delivers new and added versatility to the Nikon DX-format digital SLR system and provides DX-format photographers with a broader range of fast-aperture lens options,†said Edward Fasano, general manager for marketing, SLR Systems Products at Nikon Inc. “This f/1.8 prime lens provides users with exceptional control of background and foreground, superb low-light ability, and the natural focal length that has been the staple of photography since its inception.â€
Lightweight, compact and affordable, this lens can easily become a fast favorite for any level of photographer, and is the perfect complement to D60 users who are just starting to learn D-SLR photography or enthusiasts who love their D90. The AF-S DX NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G lens is ideal for travel, general photography, landscape shooting, portraiture or pushing creative boundaries. The stunning sharpness, clarity and color reproduction are all proof positive of more than 75 years of NIKKOR heritage and experience in optics engineering.
This lens continues the tradition of NIKKOR precision optics to provide photographers with sharp, high-resolution images and the ability to focus as close as 0.98 feet, while the integration of an ultra-compact Silent Wave Motor ensures fast, whisper-quiet AF operation.
The 35mm DX lens construction consists of eight elements in three groups, with an aspherical element to reduce size and weight, while contributing to the enhanced balance when mounted on a smaller DX-format D-SLR. A rounded diaphragm opening combined with the nine-blade aperture contributes to a substantially more circular bokeh for a more natural appearance of out-of-focus background elements. Additionally, instances of lens flare and chromatic aberration are suppressed using Nikon’s exclusive Super Integrated Coatings, which also help ensure vividly accurate color balance.
The AF-S NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G lens is scheduled to be available at Nikon authorized dealers beginning March 2009 at an estimated selling price of $199.95.* For more information, please visit www.nikonusa.com.

As part of the flagship Performance Series of COOLPIX cameras, the P90 offers new features that include a 24x Optical Zoom, a new 3.0-inch vari-angle LCD monitor with tilt function and anti-reflection coating; and 15 frame-per-second1 (fps) high-speed capability (up to 45 frames). The key to the versatility of the P90 is its 24x Optical Wide Angle Zoom-NIKKOR ED Glass Lens. This lens offers unbeatable compositional freedom, with its wide angle (26mm) to super telephoto coverage (624mm). The broad range lets consumers capture a variety of shots and scenes, ranging from sweeping landscapes to close-up action shots taking place on a sports field.
Additional features of the Nikon Coolpix P90 include:
12.1 megapixels for stunning prints as large as 20 x 30 inches, while retaining fine detail.
3.0-inch Vari-Angle High Resolution LCD and Electronic Viewfinder make it easy to compose and share pictures with friends and family. This enables photographers to shoot from higher angles or from the hip, and thereby make the best use of the reach and range of the 24x zoom lens. The incorporation of the high-resolution electronic viewfinder enables consumers to see through the lens in any lighting condition.
4-Way Vibration Reduction (VR) Image Stabilization
- Optical VR image stabilization compensates for the effects of camera shake by moving the image sensor, producing clearer, sharper results in lower lighting or unsteady conditions.
- Motion Detection automatically detects moving subjects and adjusts shutter speed and the ISO setting to compensate for camera shake and subject movement.
- High ISO 6400 capability creates new opportunities to take sharper, more natural-looking photos in lower light conditions (ISO 3200 and 6400)2.
- Nikon’s original Best Shot Selector (BSS) automatically takes up to 10 shots while the user presses the shutter, and saves the sharpest image.
Program, Shutter Priority, Aperture Priority and Manual Exposure modes give ultimate control over images. The D-SLR-type mode-dial on the top of the camera offers consumers greater personal and creative control, in any type of lighting condition.
New Sport Continuous Scene Mode for shooting at up to 15fps1 (up to 45 frames). This high-speed capture setting helps photographers stay ahead of the action.
Smart Portrait System, which integrates the following to make it a snap to capture stunning portrait photos of friends and family:
- In-Camera Red-Eye Fixâ„¢, which automatically fixes most instances of red-eye.
- Enhanced Face-Priority AF, which can detect up to 12 faces from a variety of angles, including straight on, from the side, or even in a multitude of three-quarter positions.
- Smile Mode, which automatically detects when your subject smiles and releases the shutter.

“The Nikon D200 made its debut just over 3 years ago and has since been replaced by the D300. However, this doesn’t mean the D200 is completely out of the picture. We’ve been using the Nikon D200 as one of our primary workhorses in the studio for almost 2 years and I can safely say it has proven itself to be a powerful asset.”

Nikon Coolpix P5100 Compact Camera Review
If comparing this against Canon’s Powershot G9, this camera is small in size. It offers a wide range of manual control and a user friendly optical view finder. It has a mode wheel which allows you to select from full-auto, anit-shake, scene, movie, program AE, aperture priority, shutter-priority, ISO 3200 and full manual modes. On the back are function, display playback and delete buttons.
>
The handrip on the main body makes it safe to hold, however, when turned off it feels chunkier than it’s rivals.
It is an excellent choice for a sharp, detailed quality camera that you would be happy to carry for most of the time. If the quality of output is more important than having to wade through the menu and be patient with the slow focus - it is an excellent choice.
Pros: excellent picture quality and a wide set of manual controls.
Cons: not very user-friendly menu, slow autofocus and a chunky main body.
SLR Digital Camera score: 8/10

Nikon’s New SLR is the First to Shoot Video
Point-n-shoot digital cameras have had the ability to shoot video for quite some time, but the same feature has been noticeably absent among digital SLR (DSLR) cameras. Adding insult to injury, even low end DSLRs typically cost more than high end digital cameras, yet if owners of the latter want to take videos, it meant spending even more money on a camcorder.
Nikon looks to change that trend with the release of its latest digital single-lens reflex camera, the D90, which is the company is billing as the first SLR with video capability. Nikon made it possible to record video by using a faster frame rate and a different way of processing the images.
"The big plus is that you can now shoot video with a great lens," says Steve Heiner, Nikon’s senior technical manager.
The D90 will be capable of recording both high definition and standard video clips, but the new functionality won’t come cheap. Expect to pay around $1,300 for the D90 with lens when it becomes available in stores next month.
